The Fighting Scots women’s tennis team has had another successful weekend trip. Last weekend, the team traveled to Saint Louis, Missouri to take on Fontbonne University at the Webster Groves Tennis Center. The team defeated the Fontbonne Griffins 9-0.
While the whole team was hoping for a victory, the No. 2 doubles team of senior Rachel Leifheit and junior Alison Bowman had a different goal in mind; to break the school record set in 2006 of the highest number of consecutive wins as a doubles team. Their win set the record at seven consecutive wins, but the tandem does not want to stop there.
With the 9-0 win, just 12 games were lost in total. The doubles team of Junior Emma Johanns and Senior McKenzie DeVilder won their respective match 8-2, while Freshmen Emily Laughlin and Izzie Hammond posted an 8-0 victory.
The winning streak continued in singles as Johanns, Laughlin, and Bowman won their matches 6-0, 6-1. DeVilder and Henson both cruised to easy victories of 6-0, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-2.
The Fighting Scots continue their play Saturday, October 5, for Senior Day. Play begins at 9 a.m. Saturday against Cornell and then continues with Grinnell at 3 p.m. Seniors McKenzie DeVilder and Rachel Leifheit will be honored following their second match of the day against Grinnell College.
The team will then travel to Madison, Wisconsin, on October 19-20 for the Midwest Conference Tournament.
