Women’s soccer’s incredible year ends

After a stellar performance in the playoff tournament dispatching both Cornell College and Knox College on their way to winning the title, the women’s soccer team traveled to St. Paul, Minnesota to face the University of St. Thomas, which is ranked 19th in the nation.

In brisk conditions, the Scots faced a tough task but were solid to begin the game leading to a first half shutout. A majority of the first half saw the Scots defending against a number of attacks and limiting their opponents to very few good looks on goal. The defensive unit of Payton Gosell, Katlyn Selvig, Erica Bossard, and Sarah Poirier stuck to their task well, as Coach Rizzo stated they played like warriors. The hustling duo of Devin Cross and Aspen Chadderdon also had their work cut out for them as they shielded the backline with a great abundance of tenacity and energy.

The Scots’ terrific defensive efforts were undone, however, early in the second half as St. Thomas took the lead which deflected off a few people and into the net. The Scots held firm the rest of the match but were unable to find the equalizer going down 1-0. This concluded a brilliant season for the Scots who not only made the national tournament for the first time in program history but did so by acquiring a record 14 wins in the process.

This team success saw Devin Cross, Kara-Jade Gordon, and Jacie Reis named in the all-conference first team with Jordyn Gosell named in the second team. Furthermore, Coach Rizzo was named coach of the year. Speaking of this award, Coach Rizzo mentioned, “Any success/award that any of us get is due to every member on the team. They were truly incredible this year and made this the most fun season I have ever had.”
