It was an eventful home opener for the Monmouth College women’s soccer team last Friday against the Rockford University Regents. The Scots shut out Rockford, winning their first game of the season 5-0, with each goal coming in the first half. The onslaught started in the 12th minute, when senior Kara-Jade Gordon scored the opening goal. Just a few minutes later, the Scots expanded their lead on a goal from sophomore Erica Bossard. Then, in the 19th minute, Jordyn Gosell added a third goal to the box score, giving Monmouth a commanding 3-0 lead. Coach Rizzo’s team did not stop there, as senior Jacie Reis added goal number four, and just two minutes later, in the 24th minute, freshman Sam Koppers scored the fifth and final goal for the Scots. Not to be overlooked; however, was the Scots spectacular defense, not allowing the Regents a single shot attempt all game. Next, the Scots traveled to Central College, where a hard-fought game ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw that required two overtime periods to be determined. Monmouth struck first early, as junior Devin Cross scored two minutes into the game to put the Scots on top.
Central would respond soon after, as a Dutch goal in the 42nd minute knotted the game at 1. The game would remain scoreless in the 2nd half, but would prove to be exciting as the teams exchange 14 combined shots. The first OT featured just one shot. In the second overtime, the Dutch had five shots, but none of them passed through the net, and the game ended in a draw. This moved Monmouth’s overall record to 1-0-1 through 2 games. The Scots will continue to hit the road for the next two games, going to Concordia (IL) today and Buena Vista on Sunday.
