Women’s History Month runs from March 1 to March 31 every year and is dedicated to recognizing the achievements and contributions of women. The 2025 Women’s History Month theme is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating and Inspiring Generations.” Its purpose is to highlight women who shape people’s minds in education, leadership, and mentorship.
Women’s History Month started as a week-long celebration in 1980 when President Jimmy Carter declared National Women's History Week the week of March 2 through 8. In 1982, Congress renamed the week to Women’s History Week, while establishing ceremonies and commemorations.
Several years later, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to make the entire month of March Women’s History Month. In 1987, Congress established March as Women’s History Month to celebrate the achievements women have made throughout American history.
