The Monmouth College women’s basketball team started their season with two wins last weekend in the MacMurray Tournament. On Friday, November 8, the Fighting Scots played Central Christian College. They started out with a 10-point lead and won their season opener 92-43. Senior Becca Gallis hit 12 of her 16 shots. Monmouth led the first half 43-24. Sophomore Tarae Warner had a career-high 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting. Junior Shayne Smith and sophomore Kaitlyn Osmulski both contributed 14 points each. Senior guard Yvonne Ornelas had 5 assists, and sophomore Josie Morgan came off the bench to grab a game-high five steals as Monmouth forced 23 turnovers from the Saints. Monmouth scored 42 points in the paint and had 28 points off turnovers. They also had 43 bench points. Monmouth was 33-63 (52.4%) on FG, 10-24 (41.7%) on three-point attempts, and 16-23 (69.6%) on free throw attempts.
Monmouth then played MacMurray on Sunday, November 10. Monmouth battled it out and won the game 84-71. Senior Carley Turnbull had 23 points. Sophomore Jordan Kintigh’s layup with 1:45 left in the first half stretched Monmouth to their largest lead, 37-31. MacMurray answered, closing the gap 38-37 at the break. Smith again had a 14-point game. Monmouth shot 24 of 47 (51.1%) from the floor and held MacMurray to 23 for 58 (39.7%). Monmouth was also 1-14 (7.1%) on 3-point attempts and 35-39 (89.7%) on free throw attempts. Monmouth had 40 points in the paint, 25 points off turnovers, and 37 bench points. Monmouth then played at Iowa Wesleyan on Wednesday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m.
