The Monmouth women’s basketball team played at Cornell College on Tuesday, Feb. 18. Monmouth scored 10 points in the first quarter, trailing Cornell 10-15. In the second quarter, the Fighting Scots scored 11 points compared to Cornell’s 22. Monmouth trailed after the first half, 21-37. The third quarter was Monmouth’s highest-scoring quarter, putting up 23 points compared to Cornell’s 19. Monmouth still trailed 44-56. Monmouth outscored Cornell again in the fourth quarter putting up 21 points to Cornell’s 14, but it was not enough to pull off a win; Monmouth lost 65-70. For the game, Monmouth was 21-59 (35.6%) on FG, 9-20(45%) for three-point attempts, 14-14 (100%) on free throw attempts, and senior Carley Turnbull led the team with 22 points. Cornell’s game numbers were 23-56 (41.1%) on FG, 10-28 (35.7%) on three-point attempts, and 14-19 (73.7%) for free throw attempts.
Monmouth played their last regular-season game on Saturday, February 22, at St. Norbert College. At the end of the first quarter, the game was tied 24-24. In the second quarter, Monmouth put up 12 points to St. Norbert’s 13; at the end of the first half, Monmouth trailed 36-37. Monmouth tied it in the third quarter, putting up 13 points to St. Norbert’s 12. Going into the fourth quarter, the score was 49-49. In the fourth quarter, Monmouth pulled ahead, beating St. Norbert 74-67. For the game, Monmouth was 25-52 (48.1%) on FG, 12-18 (66.7%) for three-point attempts, 12-16 (75%) for free throw attempts, and senior Becca Gallis led the team with 26 points. St. Norbert’s game numbers were 28-59 (47.5%) on FG, 3-10 (30%) on three-point attempts, and 8-13 (61.5%) on free throw attempts.
Monmouth ended their regular season 19-6 and 14-4 in conference play. Monmouth will play on Friday , Feb. 28, at 7pm in Ripon, Wis., as the No. 2 seed. They will play against the No. 3 seed, Cornell.
