The Monmouth Women’s basketball team played against Cornell College at home, on Wednesday, February 5.
Monmouth started out the game losing 16-18 after the first quarter. They trailed at the end of the first half, only scoring 15 points in the second trailing 31-40. The third quarter was Monmouth’s highest scoring, putting up 23 points and tying the game 54-54. Monmouth came out on top at the end of the final quarter, outscoring Cornell 18-8, giving them the win of 72-62.
Senior Becca Gallis led the team with 23 points. For the game, Monmouth was 22-57 (38.6%) for FG, 9-23 (39.1%) for three-point attempts, and 19-25 (76%) for their free throw attempts. This compared to Cornell’s numbers: 25-54 (46.3%) for FG, 5-18 (27.8%) for three-point attempts, and 7-10 (70%) for free throw attempts.
Monmouth then went on to play Grinnell on Saturday, February 8 at home. Monmouth started the game off in the lead, finishing the first quarter 22-19. They then added on to their lead, scoring 21 in the second quarter, leaving the first half with a lead of 43-27. The third quarter was Monmouth’s lowest-scoring quarter, putting up 16 points and keeping the lead with a score of 59-47. Monmouth ended the game putting up 17 points in the fourth, giving them the win of 76-68. Senior Carly Turnbull led the team with 20 points followed by Gallis (18), and sophomore Kaitlyn Osmulski (16). For the game, Turnbull also scored the 1,000th point of her career. Monmouth was 26-59 (44.1%) on FG, 12-24 (50%) for three-point attempts, and 12-13 (92.3%) for free throw attempts. This compared to Grinnell’s game numbers: 27-58 (46.6%) for FG, 6-17 (35.3%) on three-point attempts, and 8-12 (66.7%) on free throw attempts.
Monmouth finished Saturday 17-4 in regular season play and 12-2 in conference play. They extended their winning streak to 9.
Monmouth played then lost at Knox in Galesburg on Wednesday, February 12.
They play against Ripon College on Saturday, February 15, in Monmouth and against Cornell in Mount Vernon, Iowa, at 7:30 on Tuesday, February 18. All three games are conference games.
