The Warren County Falcons visited Glennie Gymnasium on Saturday, November 17th for a pickup game during the halftime break between Westminster College and Illinois College.
“It's always fun to come out here in Monmouth and do this,” Tom Glenn, athletic director of the Falcons, said. “Being a special Olympic athlete, you must have an intellectual disability to participate, and so, instead of that, we work on the abilities that they have instead of the disabilities.”
The Falcons teamed up with the Fighting Scots women’s basketball team and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee to give the Falcons a clinic, teaching the special Olympic players new moves.
“We had drills in the other gym and came in here for a scrimmage,” Glenn said. “Our players love to have the people see us. They love to see that we have abilities.”
The Falcons consist of 24 special Olympic athletes and travel around Illinois participating in many events throughout the year. They recently hosted an Olympic team from Pekin, Illinois, and are scheduled to travel to Beardstown, Illinois in January, followed by regionals in February. A Falcon win in Beardstown can lead the team to the state competition.
