The Fighting Scots Women’s Water Polo started their season with a weekend tournament away at Macalester College in St Paul, Minnesota. While it might not have gone the way they wanted, they definitely proved their talent. Eight of the girls came straight from the Monmouth Swimming and Diving team to the Water Polo team with four practices until the first game. This creates a challenge when trying to incorporate the new freshman and build a new offense while showcasing everyone. The Scots came into the weekend without a goalie due to injury, but captains Miranda Pasky and Skylar Rapp, along with freshmen Katlynn LaGronne and Ashling Staunton stepped up to take on that responsibility through the three games. Coach Ollis commented “These four ladies stepped up and played goal with one practice to prepare and Killed it! Lots of people say they’ll do anything to help a team but these four proved it!”
Freshman Becca Waxberg started on a career high, scoring 5 goals this weekend. Senior Brittany Lira, sophomore Marissa Logan, and freshman Ashling Staunton followed behind with four goals each. Besides Miranda playing in goal, she also dominated in the field with 15 steals this weekend.
The Scots are excited to get back in the pool and strategize for their home tournament March 7th and 8th, when they will play Carthage, Macalester, and Wittenberg.
