The visiting Augustana Vikings spoiled the Fighting Scots volleyball team’s home opener Tuesday evening by taking the match in straight sets: 25-22, 25-20, and 25-15. With this result, the Scots fall to 2-6 overall.
“Despite our loss to Augustana, some good qualities that the team showed were grit and drive. Especially in the first set when we were down a good margin, they never gave up and fought back every point,” said Monmouth head coach Hope Sackmann.
Melina Teunis and Bri Woodard each had eight kills on the evening, followed by Kaylee Celus with six. Teunis also chipped in an ace while Woodard led the team in blocks with two. Celus also led the squad with seven digs, and Isa Hughes led in assists with 12.
“The team stood tall, as we know this is non-conference season; this is our time to work on ourselves and prepare for conference. This is the time we learn what is working, what is not working, and keep grinding out every day to get stronger every day together,” said Sackmann
The Scots will return to Glennie Gym on Tuesday, September 29, to host the Coe College Kohawks, with first serve set for 7 p.m.
