Tuesday evening Monmouth College held a townhall to discuss the climate at the school. Originally located in CSB 100, the meeting had to be moved due to the large number of students and faculty attendance. President Wyatt began the meeting by acknowledging his hope for a beneficial dialogue. The townhall was moderated by Professor Walters-Kramer and Dean Willhardt. Professor Walters-Kramer started by addressing how a dialogue should proceed respectfully. The meeting consisted of three separate parts: comments from students then professors/faculty who feel that the college has not done well creating a safe community for historically marginalized groups, comments from students and professors who believe the college has not created a healthy climate for historically non-marginalized groups, and then a general reflection, commentary, thoughts, and remarks that did not necessarily fit into either of those categories. Quite a few students and staff spoke up during the two-hour meeting to voice their concerns, offer suggestions for both faculty and students to follow, and discuss their own experiences. The main question posed was, Can we create a better community or will the discussion fade into the peripheral?
