As NFL team’s start nearing the date for team salary caps, big moves are being made all over the country. Most teams are dealing with little to no cap space for this year’s upcoming draft.
After his Super Bowl win, Tom Brady was in discussions with Tampa Bay’s office. March 12, the Buccaneers and Brady came to an agreement. Tom Brady received a contract extension that keeps him in Tampa Bay until 2024 with a one-year extension to follow. For the team to be able to have Brady return and potentially lead the franchise to another Super Bowl win or 4, they needed to clear up some cap space to guarantee Brady’s contract.
Wide Receiver Chris Goodwin and Inside Linebacker Lavonte David received a franchise tag and an extension, respectively. In the hustle and bustle that has been going on between Brady and Tampa Bay, the Bucs have players: Gronkowski, Suh, Brown, and Fournette, that if the team does not reach extensions with them, will go into free agency.
Just like the New England Patriots, the Buccaneers are trying to build their dynasty around a guy who wants to keep playing football past the age of 45. If Brady can play past the age of 45, he would be competing to be the oldest NFL player. George Blanda and Adam Vinatieri played until they were both 48, setting the record for oldest player(s) in the NFL.
If Brady utilizes all his contract years with the Bucs and they win the Super Bowl every year, Tom Brady would be the oldest player in the NFL with the most championship wins by any single athlete, beating out Bill Russel with 11 championships over 13 seasons.
