“I think there should’ve been more words beginning with the letter bee,” Professor David Wright joked.
On Thursday, October 2nd, Alpha Lambda Delta’s annual Spelling Bee was held. Not only is this an event to test out students’ spelling skills, but it is also an opportunity for students to represent charities they would like to promote. The winning student receives a gift card of their choice, and the extra donations go to the charity they’re representing.
The event started off with a bang when Professor David Wright, the special guest host, entered the room hood-up and with sunglasses on. Along with yellow and black clothing for the event, and an abundance of bee puns, he was on theme and prepared. As he began the event, he revealed he was keeping a secret—a bee painted on his face. Later, Wright said, “I had great fun MCing the event. I think it’s for a great cause.”
The competition was all going smoothly, but slowly, one by one, students started to misspell, as the words became harder. The winner was Izzy Seipold, who stayed strong in her spelling until the very end. The charity she represented for the event was Loving Bottoms, a diaper bank in Galesburg. “It was a good way to get out on a boring night…to see peers and professors have fun,” said participant Krysta Pahr.
