“We're not just a spot for English papers–any assignments you have that are writing-based, we're willing to help with,” said Abby Zayas, a tutor at the center. The student-run writing center works with all students and written work–even resumes and cover letters.
It’s a common misconception that the center is only for English assignments, but that isn’t the case. “Most of the students I tutor have brought in assignments from non-English classes. It's really interesting to see different assignments from all across campus,” said Zayas.
“I think my perception of the writing center before I started working there was that it was only for English assignments,” said Zayas, “but we’ll work with essays from any discipline. If you wrote it, we’ll help you.”
The tutors who work at the center aren’t all English majors, either. Many tutors range from STEM-related majors to the humanities. Through a specialized course, trained tutors can help from the first step to the final proofreading before a work is submitted.
“When students come in for a session, we ask who they are and what they’re working on. We always ask what class and professor their assignment is from and what it is, then what they need help with. From there, it depends on how far along they are in the process,” Zayas said.
Located on the first floor of the Hewes Library, the center is open from 7 pm to 9 pm Sunday through Thursday. This semester, the center has additional hours on Mondays from 3 pm to 4 pm, Wednesdays from 3 pm to 4 pm, and Thursdays from 10 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 3 pm.
