Last Saturday, the Fighting Scots men’s tennis team had their first matches of the season versus Wartburg College and University of Northwestern-St. Paul. There were 372 days in between matches for the Scots after the Covid-19 pandemic canceled their 2020 season. The first match for the Scots was against The University of Northwestern Eagles which was the last team they played in Florida before the Covid-19 pandemic took a turn for the worse. During the 2020 season, the Scots won the match 5-4, but the results from the 2021 season were a little bit different.
The doubles tandem of Joseph Shie and Zach Harris won at the #1 doubles spot with a win of 8-6. The rest of the doubles teams did not have as much luck. The team went into singles down 2-1, but there was still optimism among the team that they could win the match.
Joseph and Andrew won their singles matches pretty easily, but by the time they had won the match was already decided. The Scots were down 3-5 and Harris was the last player left on the court where he eventually lost 6-1, 7-5.
The team then played against Wartburg College. The Scots started strong in doubles but couldn’t capitalize on the leads within their matches. The #1 doubles team was up 4-2 at one point, but eventually lost 8-5. The #2 doubles team had a huge lead but couldn’t close out to win their match. Going into singles the Scots were down 3-0. The two victories from this match came from the Shie brothers. #1 Joseph Shie played an absolutely amazing match and finally beat Lucas Huffman. Huffman was a standout player in the state of Iowa during his high school career and it was a great win for Joseph Shie. Andrew Shie won his singles match easily taking his opponent down in two sets. The next time match for the men’s tennis team is April 14 at Illinois College.
