On Friday, November 21st, the Monmouth College Art Program hosted its annual Juried Student Art Exhibition Reception. Juror and Monmouth art alum Kendall Thompson, selected multiple pieces for prizes but one student walked away with three awards including best of show.
Andrea Castaneda won the award for her painting series “The Earth Belongs to No One”. She also won best in both drawing and painting for her “Raices” series and “Recuerdos en Azul” painting.
“I channel my creativity by letting my art flow naturally, whether it’s through painting, drawing, or exploring new techniques like charcoal,” said Castaneda. “ I’ve started incorporating my Mexican American Heritage into my work, and that allowed me to connect more deeply with both me and my culture as I create.”
Castaneda said her work connects in a very personal way. “My art reflects who I am by showing my roots and personal experiences. Each piece is a way for me to express my identity and explore the intersection of my Mexican and American cultures, helping me feel grounded and connected to my heritage.”
