Monmouth College’s senior swim day was against IC on Saturday, January 27th. Both the men’s and women’s teams swept the floor with a score of 145-89 for the men’s, and a 119-107 score for the women’s. The men’s team celebrated seniors, Brady Hild, Tristan Kennon, and Camden Shmidt, and the women’s team celebrated their two seniors, Mady Gaus and Katie Oberheu. “Our overall strength is unity, we are always cheering each other on, supporting one another and just having fun,” said Oberheu.
The men’s team had many highlights and wins. Freshman Collin Heslin scored the fifth-best time in Monmouth College history with a 26.69 in the 50-yard backstroke. Kennon won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.97. Freshman Jaeden Peters won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:06.77, and freshman Kody Coyne won the 50 breaststroke in 29.93 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.99. Freshman Tariq McLarty won the 100 fly in 54.27 and the 100 freestyle in 49.56, and freshman Eli Wills won the 50 fly in 26.23.
For the women’s team, sophomore Cally Tate won the 50-yard backstroke in 28.48 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.33. Sophomore Nicole Fitch won the 200-yard freestyle. Gaus won the 50 fly in 31.29 seconds and the 100 fly in 1:08.64. Freshman Claire LaBadie won the 100 freestyle in 1:02.02.
Aside from successful scores, the team bond is one of the most important aspects according ot Obedrheru. “The thing I will miss the most about swimming is the team and the love we have for each other.” Hild added, “The thing I will miss the most are the people I have met and gotten to know through swim.”
The team will be back in the pool for the Midwest Conference Championships at Grinnell from February 16th to 18th.
