On February 1, 2021 the Cardinals acquired star third baseman Nolan Arenado from the Colorado Rockies. The Cardinals finally took a chance on a big time star and this is the first time they have done so since they signed Paul Goldschmidt in December 2018. This is a great trade for the Cardinals as they look to be in playoff contention in 2021. So why is this such a significant trade? The 29-year-old Arenado has hit .293 with an .890 OPS over eight seasons, averaging 35 home runs and 114 RBIs per 162 games. He has led the National League in home runs three times and topped the majors in RBIs twice. This adds a superstar to a team that needed one more guy to make a true playoff push and compete with the big dogs of the National League. The Cardinals will have a gold glove third baseman for the first time since Scott Rolen in the early 2000’s. With the addition of Arenado at the hot corner this gives the Cardinals three all-stars in the infield. Arenado doesn’t only produce with his glove though, he will help the Cardinals within the lineup. The Cardinals definitely won this trade and added a super skilled player who will give them consistency for years to come. They may have given up four prospects but any team would do so to get a great player like Nolan Arenado.
