Many of us probably recognize the name Handshake from the emails sent from Wackerle, but some of us (myself included!) have not yet registered for our accounts there. Monmouth actually has a link, monmouthcollege.joinhandshake.com, if you’re interested in signing up from your computer. There is also an app available that you can download to get started.
Handshake works with over 200,000 employers and has a whopping 6 million students registered. It is designed to help you find opportunities like jobs by completing your profile with your interests and studies. You can add work experience, skills, and organizations you have been a part of to complete a profile so that employers can see what you’ve been up to during your time here at Monmouth. You can also look for internships so that you can build up your resume no matter what your future plans are after graduating from Monmouth.
The site gives you the opportunity to ask students who have found employment or internship opportunities about their path to finding the right job, what worked best for their applications, where they applied, and what steps you can take to find similar success in your employment endeavors.
Jennifer Sanberg compared Handshake to LinkedIn in that it helps you get connected to the people who may be able to help you find the right opportunities for your major or interests.
The Wackerle Center is working on making it possible to schedule meetings through Handshake and even see what events are coming up through the site. For students, this is much more valuable than LinkedIn because it is a platform designed for students specifically with our employment needs in mind.
In the future, we may be using Handshake for more Wackerle activities and services, so everyone should register and see what Handshake can accomplish for you!
