Patrick Curry - Staff Writer
The Fighting Scots finished second overall in the conference at the Indoor Midwest Track & Field Conference Championship that took place here at Monmouth College over the weekend.
The men came up four points short against Cornell College, and the women came up 1.5 points short against Illinois College. While they came in second, Monmouth walked away from the championship with seven individual Conference Champions.
Maddie Boley placed first in the weight throw and shot put, totaling eight first place finishes for the Fighting Scots.
After the first day of events the Scots were in a position where some people could have counted them out. They fought hard and eventually took the lead in total points as a team on the second day.
Except, Cornell College had a surge in the 3k, where they added over 20 points to their total score. They headed into the men’s 4x400 relay in the lead. The women’s team held their lead until Illinois College won the 4x400 relay, securing another 10 points to their total.
The list of Conference Champions: Miranda Hursey in the pole vault after winning in a jump off against Madeline Benson (Illinois College); Matthew Bright in the men’s pole vault after clearing 4.00m; Tashawn Ruffin won the triple jump with a jump of 13.92m; Madison Rusk also won the triple Jump after jumping a PR 10.21m; Eli Newton won the 800m dash with a time of 1:56.05, beating out the second-place runner by 0.87 seconds; Shane Anderson won the weight throw with a throw of 19.57m; and Maddie Boley won the weight throw with a throw of 18.26m and the shot put with 13.7m.
