Before the break, the Scots Student Senate had a group discussion on the recent hate and bias incidents near campus. This discussion was open to all as the student senate wanted to hear everyone’s concerns and suggestions.
One student addressed how they came to Monmouth because they wanted a diverse student body. They want to feel safe and comfortable enough to be themselves, but recently that has not been the case. Students have been scared to walk outside and they cannot show who they truly are.
Some proposals were brought forward as to how to stop these hate and bias incidents from occurring. Monmouth College has a clear process for what happens if students smoke, drink, or damage property. It was suggested that if the college starts to implement specific policies for these hate incidents, then students will start to be held accountable for their actions.
The student representation believes that there needs to be mandatory diversity, equity, and inclusion training on campus to educate people more on the issues at hand. To make a change in the campus community, students believe that the campus itself needs to require these changes.
