The Monmouth Scots JV football team earned a thriller 21-14 victory over Central College in Monday night’s matchup. After building an early 14-0 lead, the Scots faced adversity as Central battled back to tie the game in the second half.
The Scots started with a big runs from Jordan Lukes and Ty Jackson, setting up the opening touchdown. Quarterback John Kosuch connected with Robert Shegog for a short touchdown pass, giving Monmouth a 7-0 lead. The offense continued its momentum on the next scoring drive, capped off by a nine-yard touchdown run from Trevon Moate to extend the lead to 14-0.
Central eventually found its way back into the game, taking advantage of the Scots’ offensive turnovers and scoring twice to even the score at 14-14 in the fourth quarter. Despite the momentum shift, the Scots stayed composed. Payton Salomon led a clutch scoring drive, connecting with Chase Levering for a touchdown to put Monmouth back ahead, 21-14. Mylee Hansen converted the extra point, completing a perfect night on her three kicks.
With Central attempting to tie the game late, the Scots defense locked in once again. Justin Davis helped disrupt the opposing quarterback, while Asa Braun recorded a key sack to force a fourth-down situation. Adrian Geliga and Marshawn Taylor pressured the quarterback to throw ball out of bounds, securing the 21-14 victory.
Defensive end Jeramie Hicks had two sacks to convert a turnover on downs, fighting back on defense for the offense to take the lead back., “Even though the offense were a little questionable at times, we got the job done,” said Hicks.
Hicks credited the team’s overall defense but mentioned teammate Skylar Wilson for a huge rise during the second half, “Skylar’s a dog. He’s a great player, helps get tackles, sacks, and everything we need.”
With no guarantee of another game on their schedule, the Scots’ JV record stands at 2-1.
