The Monmouth College Men’s Soccer team scored three goals, a season-high record, resulting in their first win of the season against Greenville University on Wednesday, September 20th. “The point when I knew we would win the game was when Monte scored the third goal of the game to put us up 3-0 with about 20 minutes left to play. I knew we could hold our ground to finish the game out,” said freshman Kristofer Ruiz-Camarena.
The Scots started the first half with senior goalkeeper Christopher Zavala making a diving save and not letting Greenville score in the first half. Zavala went on to make four saves in the first half. The Scots scored in the 23rd minute of the game when junior Montgomery Schroeder kicked into the bottom-left corner of the goal, making his first goal of the season.
The game was still 1-0 until the 57th minute when freshman Matthew Hipolitodrew drew a foul, and Ruiz-Camarena stepped up and scored a free-kick goal to give the Scots a 2-0 lead. “A large majority of the team is freshmen, and we work well together on the field, and the few upperclassmen we have been great leaders,” said Ruiz-Camarena. The Scots continued to fight hard, and Schroeder scored a corner kick in the 64th minute. Freshman goalkeeper Christopher Zamarripa made three saves in the second half, but Greenville scored in the final minute, ending the game with a 3-1 score. “My expectation for this season is to advance to the conference tournament at the end of the year,” said Ruiz-Camarena.
The Scots’ next home game is Senior Day on Saturday, September 30th at 1:30 p.m.
