Headed into the game, the Monmouth College’s women's soccer team sat at 2-3-2. They lost their last game against Augustana College, 0-6. Their opponent, Illinois Wesleyan, had a record of 1-5, entering the game with a fresh 5-0 win against Knox College.
Right from the jump, Illinois Wesleyan started off attacking the Scots. They started with the ball and got a shot at goal 13 seconds into the game. Scots’ Anna Caster saved the first attempt by Wesleyan's player Kayley Carew”. Though Wesleyan let it be known from the start that this game would keep the Scots on their heels.
Two minutes and 30 seconds into the game, Wesleyan got another shot at goal from Sophie Lampert and a convert, making the score 1-0.
Nine minutes into the game, the Scots got on the board with a goal from Danielle Beach, tying up the game at 1-1.
After the goal from Beach, Wesleyan began a run where they scored five goals within the next 20 minutes. Wesleyan’s Maya Flemming started off their run, followed by Tegan Timmerman, back to Flemming, and then to Liza Wiley, and capped off by Alexis Shackleford.
By then, the score sat at 6-1 with 17 minutes and 11 seconds remaining in the first half. The Scots scored two goals in those remaining 17 minutes. The first by Nyela Cruz with five minutes and 25 seconds remaining. Mariah Hobson followed, scoring a goal with 24 seconds left on the clock. The first half ended with the score 6-3.
The second half only lasted 27 minutes, ending early due to thunder and lightning.
In the second half, Wesleyan would score two more goals. At four minutes and 15 seconds the first was scored by Wiley off an assist from Ellen Dahlquist. The second dribbled in at nine minutes and 48 seconds from Wiley coming from Sophie Lampert. The score sat at 8-3, and would be the ending score.
By the end, Wesleyan had 31 attempts at goal, while the Scots had attempted six. Wesleyan had two saves by their goalie compared to the Scots eight saves.
Mariah Hobson said that the Scots “learn perseverance through games like this” and that “they wear the loss on their chest but do not dwell on it.”
