On Saturday, the Monmouth College Football lost their home opener to Wartburg 38-24.
Kicking the ball off to Wartburg, the Scots defense held Wartburg back at about the 9:25 second, when Wartburg’s Bricen White got the ball and ran it in for a 15-yard touchdown. After the field goal, Wartburg leads 7-0. After both sides were forced to punt, the Scots had seven snaps before coming up on fourth and 11, which is when Cody Szelc kicked a 36-yard field goal putting the Scots on the board. The first quarter ended 7-3.
After nine plays on the field to start the second quarter, the Scots defense forced Wartburg to turn the ball over on downs.
The Scots on their third play, quarterback Brayden Deem completed a 54-yard pass to Nate Thorton for a Scots touchdown. Szelc would go on to make his second kick of the night. Scots lead 10-7.
Wartburg went on to score again after a nine-play drive. It ended with Carter Markham passing for 17 yards to Drake George. Cel Oneil went on to make the kick making the game 14-10.
The half ended with Wartburg completing an 11-yard pass for a touchdown from Carter Markham to Henry Carter. After converting on the field goal, the half ended 21-10.Â
The second half of the game started with the Scots on the fourth play. Nate Wrublik got the ball and ran it in for a 49-yard touchdown. Szelc would go on to convert on another field goal.
Wartburg’s Markham went on to complete a 26-yard pass to John McConohy for another Wartburg touchdown. The third quarter ended with a score of 28-17.
In the fourth, Wartburg scored another touchdown with a four-yard run by Markham. Their field goal kick was good, making the score 35-17. They later would convert a 30-yard field goal for three more points.
Scots’ QB Deem would go on to complete a pass to Jackson who scored. Wartburg would go on to hold the ball for the remainder of the game and win 38-24.
This game marked Brayden Deem’s first game as the starting quarterback for the Scots and he ended up throwing for over 300 yards. Both receivers Jackson Bergren and Nate Thorton got over 100 receiving yards. Nate Wrublik ran for over 50 yards and scored a touchdown. Defensive back Derrek Chandler led the team with over ten tackles.
