The softball team lost both games in their double header on Tuesday April 18th at home against Illinois Wesleyan University.
IWU started strong, scoring two runs in the first and five runs in the third. Monmouth’s only run of the night was scored on an RBI single by freshman infielder Mackenzie Gerard. The Scots held IWU scoreless in the third but struggled to string enough hits together to score any of their own. IWU finished the game scoring a combined eleven runs in the fourth and fifth innings to end the game with an 18-1 victory and 19 hits.
Sophomore pitcher Lizzie Durfee started the second game of the night and kept the Titans to only one hit through the first three innings. However, The Scots couldn’t use this to their advantage, failing to put a runner on base. IWU took the lead in the fourth with an RBI double and a two-run homer. In the fifth, they added on four more runs, bringing the score to 7-0.
IWU picked up one more hit in the sixth but could not score, while the Scots went down in order. In the seventh inning, junior second baseman Karliegh Ashby broke the perfect game with a single down the right-field line. The Scots couldn’t capitalize, and the game ended in a 7-0 win for IWU.
The Scots’ next game is on Saturday at Greenville University.
