Coming into the NCAA Tournament everyone thought that Baylor, Gonzaga, and Illinois were the frontrunners to win the tournament but as usual there were some early upsets. In the first round, we saw #2 Ohio State lose to #15 seed Oral Roberts. This came as a surprise to just about everybody. After Oral Roberts beat OSU approximately 5.2 million brackets in the United States were busted. There were some other upsets which included #13 seed Ohio versus #4 Virginia, #14 Abilene Christian versus #3 Texas, and #12 Oregon State versus #5 Tennessee. None of these teams were expected to win because they were mid major teams going against some of the best programs within the United States.
The round of 32 brought some great teams together to play, but once again we saw some crazy upsets. #15 Oral Roberts beat #7 Florida and will keep dancing into the Sweet Sixteen. They are only the second #15 seed to make it to the Sweet Sixteen and the first since Florida Gulf Coast University did in 2013. Some of the matchups we have coming up on March 27th will be really interesting to watch. Two of the games I think could go either way are #11 Syracuse versus #2 Houston and #8 Loyola Chicago versus #12 Oregon State. Houston is a great team but Syracuse has been on a roll and Buddy Boeheim can’t be stopped. I’m predicting that Loyola Chicago makes a run to the Elite Eight or even the Final Four. They have Sister Jean on their side. Overall, this March Madness has been really odd. I have never seen this many upsets in the tournament and it is nice to see new teams making it deeper. I think this can be attributed to how advanced college athletics has become.
