On September 27th, the bi-weekly Scots Student Senate meeting commenced as usual. Unlike routine proceedings, a new executive position was passed for nominations. Scots Student Senate affirmatively voted to add a Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) position in their constitution. During the new business section of the meeting, nominations for the DEI position were taken. Fatima Gutierrez ‘24, Grace Cornelius ‘24, and Payton Crims ‘27 were nominated for the position.
Speeches will take place on Wednesday, October 4th, at 6:30 p.m. in CSB 100. Voting will be open to the whole campus after speeches, and the winner will be announced on October 11th.
Scots Student Senate also introduced the new Director of Campus Safety, Chris McLaughlin. McLaughlin, along with other members of Campus Safety, spoke about their purpose on campus and answered questions. “We’re not here to catch you. We’re here to check up on you,” said McLaughlin. The Campus Safety staff also discussed the possibility of self-defense classes, which would be available to the entire campus. Other plans the Campus Safety team is working on include implementing drills, such as fire and tornado drills. Active shooting drills are also a main priority for McLaughlin. “It is a very disturbing thing, but we have to be prepared for it,” said McLaughlin.
