Fans should prepare to see a new face leading the way this softball season as the Monmouth College Community welcomes Alexa McClaughry to the Fighting Scot’s Athletic Staff. The timing could not have been better for McClaughry. As Fighting Scot’s were saying farewell to John Goddard, the winningest coach in Scots’ softball history, MacMurry College was saying farewell indefinitely as the college closed their doors in the Spring of 2020. McClaughtry was their former head softball coach.
With a new coach, comes a new coaching style. McClaughry equates her coaching style to servant leadership. She views her role as someone who is there to educate, encourage, and mentor the student athletes she comes into contact with. In order to do so, McClaughry looks forward to the building positive relationships with her players, “I love the relationships involved in the game. I have met a lot of really good people as a player and learned a lot about life in the process. As a coach, I love having the ability to positively influence my student-athletes almost daily.”
Though this season is not what McClaughry pictured when she imagined her first season with the Fighting Scot’s, she still has big plans for the diamond. McClaughry hopes to bring a new competitive edge to the diamond. “I believe we can grow significantly by recognizing the speed of the game and learning to better attack the ball in the box,” she states. McClaughry is ready to not only help the Scot’s make strides for the future but she is also optimistic that the future will include the Midwest Conference Tournament. “I hope to make it to the conference tournament this season. I truly believe we have the talent and coaching staff to compete with the top teams in the conference.”
So far during the short time she has spent on campus, McClaughry, “[loves] how helpful everyone on campus is.” When asked what is one thing McClaughry wants the campus community to know about her she replied, “I am excited to be a member of the Fighting Scot community. I hope to make a positive impact and continue building the softball program during my time here. #RollScots”
We at The Courier, along with the rest of the Monmouth College Community wish McClaughry and the Fighting Scot’s Softball Team “Good Luck” this season.
