Welcome to Music on Repeat: a list of music that has been on my personal replay list recently. These songs are as follows:
Nilüfer Yanya – Heat Rises: There are a lot of nostalgic tones imbued in this song, such as the guitar riffs and the cutesy shots of keyboard—they kind of take you back to a slightly older generation of indie. Yanya’s rather mixed heritage and background obviously gives her voice a unique twist, and it works to the song’s benefit as she sings, “Getting high from just the heat, I’ll be lost until we meet.”
Beach House – On The Sea: What a bittersweet song. It’s the type of indie/alternative music that might make you sad or even sadder than you already were, especially if your sadness comes from a feeling of lostness in the world…
Crumb – M.R.: You know how people say that “xyz is the best music to listen to when you’re high?” I’d argue that this is the case for this song, except that it’s alternative indie, and the intoxicating, dreamy, vertiginous synths and atmospheres will give you that “high” feeling on its own, just by listening to it too closely. Very trippy, soothing production and composition.
Gallant – Compromise Ft. Sabrina Claudio: If you’re looking for good, modern R&B infused with sensuality and sexiness, this might be what you’re looking for. Gallant and Sabrina Claudio perform a subtle yet endearing collaboration, as their vocal inflections come off as both subtle yet ever so alluring.
Earthgang – Up: I’m not sure what else to say about this track, except that it’s extremely good hip hop. The beat features tribal instrumentation and amazing background vocals, and it bumps. The most appealing part about “Up” is the vocal inflections that Earthgang applies to their voices through lyrics and ad-libs. The end result is a truly compelling piece of music.
Slushii — Find: Just a chill, moody sample of electronic music with some R&B flavors here and there. It doesn’t try to do too much with its plunky digital keys, slightly detuned piano, and swelling synths. Still, its minimalist approach works.
Instupendo – Earring (Dylan Brady Remix): I have no clue what the lyrics mean, but I know that the production is crazy—and it makes sense, given that Dylan is part of the eccentric 100 gecs. It sounds like EDM, trap, and maybe a bit of Dubstep had a child who slightly overdosed on caffeine, and the instrumentation from this song is the result.
Honorable Mention:
TeejayX6 – Dark Web: There’s something so funny about TeejayX6 and the kinds of rap songs he’s been putting out lately… I mean, he gives a step by step guide on how to be a scammer on this song, with the opening line: “The government tried to ban me from the dark web…” Regardless, it’s still more entertaining than a lot of the mainstream being put out, so I’ll take it.
