Saturday, Sept. 14, the men’s soccer team faced Buena Vista University. In a 90-minute game, the Scots beat Buena Vista 3-0. After being up 1-0 heading into halftime, the team knew that there was still more work to be done.
“We had a conversation about how many minutes Trey (Trey Yi, Center Back) was going to play today, and he said he wanted it. So that showed everybody else that 90-minutes clean sheet is what is important,” said Coach Ian Hatleli. (Having a clean sheet means you keep your opponents from converting on any of their goals.)
The first goal of the game came from Owen Murray, Forward, 27 minutes into the first half.
“As a striker, that’s something that I think about and kind of just have to put the team on my back at times and do the work to get the goals, and I’m glad I was able to do that today and play better recently,” said Owen Murray.

That energy seemed to carry over into the second half with Aimilios Ioannou, Midfielder, scoring a goal 11 minutes and 43 seconds into the second half, giving the Scots a 2-0 lead.
“I was really energized leading up to the game, and I felt like we had a really good run of sessions and tactically we did really good today, so I was just waiting to get that goal,” said Ioannou.
Being up 2-0, a team may become complacent, but that was not the case for the Scots, who intended to add to their lead.
Just one minute after Ioannou’s goal, Murray would go on to score another goal, coming off a header to put the Scots up 3-0. This would conclude the scoring for the night, and the Scots would go on to win.
“I think we need to take what we did well in this game and move forward, but we also can’t accept a really good win and get comfortable where we are because we are going to play better teams moving forward, and so we should keep this momentum going,” said Ioannou.
