Monmouth College students will travel to Scotland from May 22 through May 29, where they’ll experience the country’s historic landmarks, landscapes, and cultural heritage. Led by Professors Joan Wertz and Tom Prince, the short-term study abroad trip promises an immersive exploration of Glasgow, the Highlands, Edinburgh, and St. Andrews.
“This trip offers students a unique opportunity to step outside the classroom and engage with history and culture in a hands-on way,” said Wertz.
The adventure begins with an overnight flight to Glasgow, followed by a guided city walk featuring highlights such as Strathclyde University, George Square, and the City Chambers. From there, the group will travel through the scenic Highlands, with stops at Loch Lomond, a gondola ride in the Nevis Range, and a boat cruise on the legendary Loch Ness.
Students will also explore Scotland’s past with visits to Stirling Castle and the historic battlefield of Culloden Moor. They will take in iconic sights along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, including the Palace of Holyroodhouse, St. Giles Cathedral, and Edinburgh Castle.
The itinerary wraps up with a visit to St. Andrews, home to the world-famous golf course and historic university, and a tour of Kingsbarns Distillery. Flights to and from Scotland connect via Reykjavik, Iceland, allowing students to enjoy the Icelandic scenery, even if only for a short time.
Prince emphasized the trip's educational value, noting that travel brings coursework to life. “Seeing these places in person allows students to connect with history, culture, and globalized strategies in a way that is amplified through our travel experience,” he said.
Exploring Scotland alongside faculty members and peers is an exciting prospect for students. “I’m looking forward to spending time with some of my senior classmates in another country,” said senior Business and Marketing student, Paige Bergschneider. “This will be my first time going out of the country, and I’m excited to go with some of my favorite professors and best friends.”
The trip is organized through Explorica, a student travel company, and includes round-trip airfare, guided tours, and accommodations. The registration deadline has passed, but Monmouth College offers multiple short-term study abroad trips in the 2025-2026 school year.
