What are the essentials for a Monmouth student? As a sophomore, I feel like I still don’t know everything that a Scot should try while they’re on campus, but I do know that the places I’ve gone so far have been awesome. My list is as follows!
Try Alfano’s and Pepperoni’s to cast your vote on the better pizza place (Pepperoni’s all the way), walk around campus in the middle of the night at least once, experience the horror of running out of Flex (bonus points if you’re at Einstein’s when you realize), go to the gym, promise you’ll go more often, never go again, try mixing ice cream with any/all the desserts in the caf, invite people over and stay up all night, host a self-care Sunday where you put on face masks and listen to music, join a club or student organization that you never would have thought twice about, play Pokémon (join my Discord!), go to an event only for the free food, try to walk to County Market or Fairway, acquire a sixth sense for the students who have a car, walk around the Walmart in Galesburg for hours only to buy snacks, go to the movie theater in Galesburg at least once, visit Crybaby bridge and take ominous pictures, and go to the library late at night to study (the atmosphere hits different).
I asked around about which bar the upperclassmen prefer, and the general consensus I received was that the Bijou Pub and Danny’s Tap are the best places to go in town. Once you’re old enough to drink legally, you might consider stopping by to see what all the fuss is about. They also said to have someone not under the influence come and pick you up just to go through the TBell drive through...that is the one that really does hit different. Some upperclassmen who live in co-ed dorms said to get to know your neighbors, you never know when you’d need them or when you would want to have a movie/game night.
In addition, there are lots of resources on campus that I think students should try, like the Writing Center, counseling, and working somewhere on campus. There are lots of opportunities to try new things while you’re a student here, and you should take advantage of all the things offered to you!
