Monmouth College Sports History: 2014 Turkey Bowl

This week in Monmouth sports history, we look back at the 2014 Turkey Bowl between Knox and Monmouth College. In this highly anticipated showdown, Monmouth’s defense held Knox to less than 200 yards of offense, limiting the Fire to just 65 yards on the ground and 178 overall yards. Unlike the halted Prairie Fire offense, the Scots held control of the game through the final three quarters.

The Fighting Scots got the offense started after a scoreless first quarter when C.J. Shields ‘15 hauled in a seven-yard touchdown pass from QB Alec Dutko ‘17 on the first play of the second quarter.

Monmouth added another score midway through the second quarter as Trent Rains ‘18 gained 42 of his game-high 150 yards to set up a seven-yard TD run.

Knox countered on the ensuing kickoff and marched 65 yards before the Scots stopped the Fire at the Monmouth one as time ran out in the first half.

Holding a 13-2 lead into the third quarter, the Scots took their first possession into Knox territory settling for an Ace Henricks’ ‘15 25 yard field goal.

KeShon Young’18 tacked on a 13-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter to move the Scots ahead 23-2. Young finished the day with 101 yards on 11 carries.

Monmouth’s Jacob Wilson added to his career interceptions record, picking off the Prairie Fire on the their possession and returning it 21 yards to the opposing team’s 38 yard line to set up another Scots’ score. After combining runs by Austin Ray ‘18 and an 11-yard pass to Easton Schaber ‘18 , the Scots got another field goal from Henricks. His 30-yard boot gave the Scots the final margin at 33-2.
