During Family Weekend, the Monmouth College football team defeated Illinois College by 51-20 moving to a record of 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Midwest Conference.
Prior to the Scots scoring 51 straight points, the Blueboys scored on the opening play from the line of scrimmage with a 73 yard touchdown.
“Well it definitely woke us up as a team and we definitely came into this game remembering last year's shootout between our previous offenses, “said Cole Jackson, sophomore defensive back. “The opening touchdown woke us up realizing it should not have happened and it was time to focus up mentally and physically. From that moment we used it as a chip on our shoulder to score 51 unanswered points.”
In addition to rushing eight times for 61 yards and a touchdown, Quarterback Riley Fetterer completed 17 of his 21 throws for 236 yards and two touchdowns. With 86 rushing yards on 12 carries, Devin Lawrence had the most on the squad and scored three times. Nate Thornton gained 91 yards and a touchdown on seven catches.
“After the win the energy was high knowing we get to rest up and focus on ourselves for a week before game planning for our homecoming game vs Lawrence University,” said Jackson.
