Last weekend, the men’s tennis team returned to ac-tion after their spring break trip to Orlando. In a matchup with Wartburg College, the Scots were defeated in match play 6-3.
In No. 1 singles match, Joseph Shie was narrowly de-feated after two highly-competitive sets that ended in scores of 7-6 and 7-5. Joseph’s brother Andrew Shie got Monmouth in the win column as the No. 2 singles match went into third-set overtime play after Shie dropped set one 6-4 but rallied in dominant fashion taking set two 6-0. Andrew Shie carried that momentum into the third set where he won 10-2 to claim the match.
In No. 3 and 5 singles matches, fellow Scots Zach Harris and Brendan Guenther duplicated the rally shown earlier by Andrew Shie. Harris dropped his opening set 6-2 but rallied back in set two with a 6-1 win. In the match deciding set three, Harris bested Wartburg’s Will McDonald 10-6 for the victory. Brendan Guenther followed suit dropping set 6-2 before rallying with wins in sets two and three 7-5 and 10-8.
Monmouth’s Alex Martin was narrowly defeated in the No. 4 singles match as he dropped consecutive sets 7-6 and 6-3.
In doubles play, Wartburg ran the table claiming all three matches.
Up next the Scots will travel to Wis. for matches with Lawrence University and St. Norbert College on Sat.
