Last weekend was a productive and enjoyable trip to Wisconsin for the men’s soccer team as they began their opening conference games at St. Norbert and Beloit College.
After some mixed form, it was time for the men’s team to make a statement, and what better way to do that than with a first match against a strong St. Norbert side on September 28. The game, however, did not begin well for the Scots, conceding in the opening two minutes. However, the boys responded and buckled in for a gutsy performance. Despite being outshot, the Scots held firm with impressive displays from midfield duo Alvaro Alvarez and Connor Martin as well as defensive pairing Jaxon Coleman and Chase ‘Sauce’ Cranford. With only two minutes left to play, the Scots were rewarded for their hard work with a classy finish from Alvarez after a gorgeous cross from Connor Graham. With the game tied at 1-1 the game went into overtime as both sides pushed for the win. The team was able to hold on for a dramatic draw and take home a well-earned point.
Day two of the away trip saw a conference game at September 29 against Beloit, played indoors due to adverse conditions. The game was a tight affair, with the Scots enjoying most of the possession and scoring opportunities. The second half started perfectly for the Scots, with Alvarez continuing his fine form in front of goal with another sublime finish to take the lead. Beloit managed to score ten minutes later to tie the game. Monmouth managed to find a way, though, after captain Lucas Sondgeroth’s superb finish winning the game.
Next up is an October 5 conference home game against Cornell before a challenging game against local rivals.
