In the Monmouth College Men’s Lacrosse match on Tuesday, the Fighting Scots lost in a thrilling 7-6 score to the University of Dubuque that took four overtime periods to decide.
It all started in the first period, where freshman Liam Meyer put the Scots on the board. The Spartans would respond; however, in the form of two goals to close out the first period.
The Spartans’ onslaught continued with another goal in the second period, as the Spartans extended their lead to 3-1.
Monmouth; however, had an answer of their own. Two goals in the second period by Kyle Hatfield knotted the score at 3-3 heading into the intermission.
In the second half, the Spartans answered, scoring the only goal of the third period. This left the Scots with a 4-3 deficit to overcome heading into the fourth period. Monmouth fought and answered with another goal scored by Kyle Hatfield.
Dubuque would respond with another goal, but right back came the Scots. Shane Herkert scored a big goal with just over nine minutes left to play to tie the game at 5-5.
In this seesaw of a fourth period, UD scored another goal in the waning minutes of the game to allow the Spartans to reclaim the lead. With under a minute to go, the score seemed set when Chase Cranford scored an incredible goal to tie the score once again at 6-6, thus forcing overtime.
The match became a grind as three overtime periods passed with neither team able to put the other away. In the fourth overtime; however, the Spartans sealed the win with only thirty seconds left in the period.
With the loss, the Scots move to 2-5. Next for men’s lacrosse is an away matchup with Cornell College on Wed.
