In January 2020 the wait is finally over for the 21 and over stoner. Recreational marijuana will be legalized! Many college students are thrilled – Illinois will become the 11th state to legalize marijuana. This will be beneficial to our state’s debt, infrastructure, incarcerated people, and the lonely stoner trying to free his mind at night, but how will it affect us at Monmouth College?
According to the law, recreational weed can only be consumed in one’s personal home and some businesses that will be onsite. This aspect of law is a replication of policies in other states where Marijuana is legalized. How does that work on a college campus, our home 9 months out of the year?
According to Dean Hutchinson schools in Illinois will be allowed to choose their rules on campus. Because accredited schools receive federal support (i.e. funding) they are obliged to follow the federal law. This is one way that the government enforces laws.
At “the end of the day we have to protect the [Monmouth] institution” so that we students can continue to pursue our academics, athletics, and interests. Keep an eye out in the next couple of months for a townhall that will provide information on Monmouth’s policy revisions.
