Last fall when it was announced that Illinois would sell marijuana recreationally starting January 1, 2020 students around campus were excited for the prospect of being able to legally consume the schedule one drug within the friendly confines of the campus.
Upon returning to school for the spring semester Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students Laura Hutchinson sent a campus-wide email to address how Monmouth College would deal with marijuana on campus. The answer: it would not tolerate recreational usage. Dean Hutchinson said that “under federal law, marijuana is still a schedule one drug and since the college receives federal funding for financial aid and research it will not tolerate the usage of it on campus.
