The Fighting Scots extended their winning streak to four games with decisive victories over Grinnell College 49-9 and Illinois College 48-15 on back-to-back game days.
Records are meant to be broken, and Chase Newman made his mark. Lined up for a “Four Verticals” play 98 yards from the end zone, Newman was ready for a historic moment.
“When I step onto the field, I would say my mentality carries my confidence,” Newman said. At the snap, Quarterback Brayden Deem released a precise spiral that found Newman in stride. Newman then sprinted into the north end zone, breaking a record by 3 yards that had stood since 2004, when Mitch Tanney connected with Evan Haffner on a 95-yard reception against Lawrence University. The crowd erupted as the play unfolded, witnessing a moment that would be remembered for years.
“It was a designed play call,” Newman said. “When I stuttered, the defender had to respect it, and from there it was easy.”
Deem finished the game with 453 passing yards which breaks past Fighting Scot quarterback Alex Tanney’s record of 451 yards against Knox College back in 2009. 301 of those yards went to Newman, forming a duo the Blue Boys struggled to contain.
“We spend a lot of time together outside of football,” Newman said. “When we step on the field together, we know what one another is going to do.”
Newman hauled in four touchdown receptions, while Mason Emin and Angel Duarte also reached the end zone, securing Monmouth’s commanding win.
The Scots look to add more to the winning streak as they take on Cornell College on Saturday, Oct. 18 with kickoff at 2:00 p.m. for the annual Homecoming game.
