The Monmouth College Fighting Scots hosted the St. Norbert Knights this past Saturday, playing in the Midwest Conference championship. The Scots fought hard on their turf, receiving their third ring in the past five years. Due to the two powerful defenses, the final score was only 10-3, but the game never lacked excitement.
Neither team found the end zone as the first quarter was scoreless. The second quarter had a similar story until Joey Biel got his chance to kick with 5 minutes left in the half. Biel sent a 32-yard field goal through the uprights, making the score 3-0. The Knights responded quickly, going on a 75-yard drive and scoring a touchdown right before the half.
The third quarter, and most of the fourth, remained scoreless as the teams battled. With less than a minute left in the game, Carter Boyer entered and marched the Scots right downfield. Boyer immediately found Jake Uryasz downfield and picked up a 50-yard gain to put the Scots on St. Norbert’s 40-yard line. Boyer then found Nathan Graham for a 5-yard gain, putting the ball on the 35-yard line. After finding Uryasz and Graham once more, the Knights got called for pass interference and the Scots got placed on the 5-yard line. With the momentum going their way, Boyer scrambled out of the pocket and found Uryasz in the endzone with just two seconds left on the clock, making the score 10-3. The Knights recovered a squib quick and ran the last seconds on the clock before being brought down.
The Scots will continue their season as this win advanced them into the NCAA Tournament. They will play in the first round on November 23 at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for a noon kickoff.
