It was a thrilling start to the season for the men’s lacrosse team this week. Tuesday, the Scots defeated Augustana College in an 8-7 victory.
In the exciting affair, the Scots were led by Thomas Van Alstine, who recorded a hat trick, scoring a goal in each of the first three quarters. Adding to the scoring barrage was Jeff Knapp, who recorded two goals during the game. The match was hotly contested throughout, with Augustana scoring three straight goals in the first half, opening up a 5-3 lead. Before the half, however, the Scots responded when a goal from Chase Cranford cut the lead to 5-4. In the third quarter, Augustana had numerous chances, but failed to score on all 11 shots. Van Alstine scored his third goal of the game for the Scots in the third, tying the game at 5-5.
The fourth quarter proved equally exciting, as the Scots took the lead and then some on three straight goals from Shane Herkert, Knapp, and Joe Incorvati. With victory in sight, however, the Vikings rallied, scoring two more goals to cut the lead to 8-7. The Scots, fortunately, came through in the end, preventing a third goal from forcing overtime. The win brings the Scots to 1-0 to open the season.
Next for the Scots is a road contest against Clarke University next Tuesday in Dubuque, Iowa.
