Winning two Golden Globe awards and three Emmys, the Amazon Original TV show, Fleabag, is a hit. Writer, producer, and lead actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge highlights real human struggles in this comedy-drama.
Fleabag has two seasons, one that premiered in 2016 and another in 2019. It is a short series, only containing twelve episodes, but it is still unforgettable.
The first season dives into the title character - Fleabag’s - life after the death of a close friend. Fleabag navigates grief as well as relationship problems with family and partners. Fleabag breaks the fourth wall throughout the series, allowing a connection with the character and her thoughts. One main aspect of this first season is Fleabag’s relationship with her sister, Claire. Like all of Fleabag’s relationships, the one with her sister is on again and off again. Perhaps the most notable interaction in this first season is the sister’s trip to a Silent Retreat. None of these episodes were stand out or particularly memorable, but the second season makes the whole series worth watching.
The second season of Fleabag revolves around a new marriage in Fleabag’s family, and her relationship with The Priest, played by Andrew Scott. Waller-Bridge and Scott have great chemistry, making this season a wild ride. This season deals heavily in religion and blasphemy, especially Fleabag’s thoughts on both. She is conflicted with having an attraction to someone in the religious field since she is an atheist. Their relationship is a roller coaster, involving a fox, the Catholic church, and acceptance. Waller-Bridge’s last few lines of dialogue in this season are truly heartbreaking, but worth the watch.
This is a perfect weekend-binge show. I strongly suggest this show to anyone who is willing to laugh, cringe, and sometimes cry about this show about everyday life. 8.5/10
