The Scots traveled to Waverly, Iowa, on Saturday to take on the Wartburg Knights but fell short when the clock hit zero. With a bye week following Wartburg’s game, the Scots fought hard and left it all on the field.
The time of possession on Saturday was near even between both teams but the penalties were a different story. The Scots suffered from 13 penalties totaling 149 yards throughout the game while the Knights were able to keep it at 2 penalties for 15 yards. Devin Lawerence led Monmouth in rushing yards with an impressive career-high of 154 yards out of the 164 yards total.
Wartburg came out hot and put up 10 points in the first quarter, but the Scots didn’t take long to respond. Brennan White hit Jake Uryasz for a 42-yard touchdown on their first drive of the second quarter to bring the game within 3.
The Scots and Knights continued to fight as the Scots forced a punt, giving them the ball close to their endzone. Wartburg pulled off a pick-six on their next possession and ended up scoring two more touchdowns before the half.
After a lengthy weather delay, the Scots kept Wartburg from scoring the whole third quarter. The fourth quarter caught up quick as Wartburg was able to score two more touchdowns, ending the game with a score of 38-9.
The Scots will bounce back from the loss as they prepare for St. Norbert at 1 p.m. on September 28 in April Zorn Memorial Stadium.
