The Scots traveled to Mount Vernon, Iowa this past weekend to take on Cornell College during their homecoming weekend. Despite a 0-0 first quarter, Monmouth battled hard and went home victorious with a 27-14 win.
The Rams came out of the second quarter and put seven points on the board without hesitation. The Scots responded by going on a 27-point scoring streak before being broken by the Rams in the fourth quarter.
Jake Uryasz scored first for the Scots with a 48-yard pass from Walker Dycus. Joey Biel then opened up the third quarter with a field goal. Not long after, Donny Friedel recovered a fumble in the endzone for six more points and Joey Biel put it through the uprights for the seventh.
Joey Biel opened up the fourth quarter with another field goal. Shortly after, Terrance Best rushed three yards to put another touchdown on the board. The Pioneers were able to tally one more touchdown before the clock struck zero, though they still suffered a 27-14 loss on their homecoming weekend.
Impressive defensive efforts came from Clark Gaden and Brad Buchner with 20 tackles and a caused fumble between them. This is the second week in a row that Gaden has led the team in tackles, tallying 19 against Illinois College.
Jake Uryasz and Seth Foster led Monmouth on the receiving end of the ball. Uryasz had one touchdown and 135 yards on the day. Terrance Best and Alec Cooley led the pack with over 100 yards. Best had 84 yards and a touchdown on the day while Cooley was able to rush for 50 yards.
Monmouth travels to the University of Chicago on Saturday, November 2 to face the Phoenix, as we are the top two teams in the Midwest Conference’s South division. Interestingly, the Phoenix also had their regular season cut short as well. They were scheduled to play Grinnell college last week, but that game was cancelled as well. The Phoenix are 4-2 on the season and undefeated in conference play at 2-0.
This will be a pivotal conference matchup, as a win Saturday would be a major victory in advancing the Scots’ push for the postseason.
