Football dominant against St. Norbert

The Scots put on a show on Family Weekend, controlling the September 28 game from the first whistle to the last. April Zorn Memorial Stadium stayed full of students and their families as Monmouth relentlessly ran the scoreboard up against St. Norbert, putting up 31 points alone in the first quarter. The final score read 34-14 and the Scots finished victorious for their first win of the season.

Monmouth’s offense ruled the time of possession and total yards on the day, outrushing St. Norbert 154-6. The defense also took a stand and had three of their six interceptions in the first quarter. The offense was able to capitalize, as each interception in the first quarter lead to a scoring drive.

Brennan White played a big role for the offense in Saturday’s game with nearly 200 yards on the day and one touchdown. Henderson Francois was a big target and tallied 78 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown, while also rushing for 68 yards and two more touchdowns. Devin Lawrence was also able to slip past the St. Norbert Defense and score one touchdown on his 78 rushing yards.

Carter Lewis and Brandon Graeff led the defense with seven tackles each. Clark Gaden was able to get by St. Norbert’s offensive line and get two sacks on the day, and even grabbed his first interception of the season. Reggie Willis and Korbyn Personett also played big roles in stopping the Knights from being successful, tallying nine tackles and one sack between the two of them.

Revenge proved to be particularly sweet for the Scots, as Monmouth lost to the Green Knights at the MWC Championship a year ago by a score of 7-10. It had to be a satisfying feeling for the Scots, as St. Norbert leaves the Midwest Conference after this season. The win moves the Scots to 1-2 on the season, and 1-0 in conference play.

The Scots will continue to be dominant on the field as they travel to Ripon on October 5. In a stunning development, the Scots’ game against Grinnell College scheduled for October 12 has been cancelled. Grinnell has decided to cancel their entire football season in 2019, due to injury problems and an overall lack of players. This leaves the Scots with an off week in two weeks, and then the homecoming game at home against Illinois College. Then, the Scots will hit the road again when they travel to Mount Vernon, IA to take on Cornell College.
