Remember when Instagram and Facebook glitched? Yeah, me too. It was the worst day of my week. I cried multiple times. Maybe I’m overdramatic, but I am so reliant on social media that I felt like I was cut off from the whole world that day. Every time I opened Instagram, I got an error message saying they couldn’t “load more content” and my likes disappeared. I couldn’t post, comment or scroll through explore. This was a massive event because it wasn’t a quick fix. Instagram usually fixes bugs within a few hours, and the bugs are small – maybe one or two features don’t work, but it’s still usable. This time, it was gone gone and I couldn’t handle it. Facebook said it was a “server configuration change that triggered a cascading series of issues.” The platforms affected were Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. This explains why the problems were so widespread and massive, but what really bothered me was the fact that I didn’t hear anything at the time and the app itself didn’t announce the problem to users. This led all of us to believe the problems were individual, and some feared their accounts had been terminated for violating community guidelines. While the company did finally address the problem, it took time for them to respond and that time left users to come to their own conclusions. Some people are fed up with Instagram as a whole because of the frequent bugs and issues. Others think that the company should be quicker to act when things break. Overall, it was a bad situation made worse with a bad response.
