The Monmouth College women’s soccer team hosted the Coe College Kohawks at Peacock Memorial Park on Sept. 17, battling to a 0-0 draw in a physical, hard-fought contest.
Senior goalkeeper Brontë de Zwart recorded a season-high six saves, anchoring the Scots defense and preserving the shutout.
Despite the scoreless result, the match was anything but passive. The teams combined for 14 fouls — three by the Scots — with both sides pushing aggressively on offense and staying locked in defensively.
“You have to take it one minute at a time and stay calm,” de Zwart said.

As the game wore on, and a shutout remained within reach, de Zwart emphasized the importance of mental focus in tight matches.
“You can’t think about the score,” she said. “If you put more pressure on yourself according to the score, it will lead to mistakes.”
Coe outshot Monmouth 19-13 overall and 6-5 in shots on goal. The Kohawks also dominated in corner kicks, 10-1, but de Zwart’s efforts ensured none of those chances translated into goals.
With under 15 minutes to play, Coe found an opening inside the goal box, firing off a shot that de Zwart stopped with a diving save to her right, knocking it out for another corner.
“It gave me adrenaline,” she said. “I definitely knew it was important when I heard our supporters and bench cheering.”
Coe pressed again with another corner kick, but the Scots held firm.
“I also had to stay focused because it meant we had a corner to defend immediately,” de Zwart said. “We’ve been talking a lot about the importance of keeping our marks and going up for air duels during defensive corners.”
Freshman Morgan Kistler led the Scots with five shot attempts, including two on goal. Junior Mariah Hobson followed with three shots (one on goal), while sophomore Kiersten Medinger tallied two (one on goal). Junior Molly Shook also recorded a shot on goal.
Coe goalkeeper Lilly Monroe saved five shots to keep the Kohawks level.
Following a two-game road stint at UHSP in St. Louis and Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, Monmouth will return home to open Midwest Conference play on Saturday against Beloit College. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. as part of a women’s-men’s doubleheader. Senior Day festivities will take place before the match.
