Lake Forest jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the first set, but the Scots responded with a strong rally led by senior Shea Scott and sophomore Kaylee Celus. Scott sparked the comeback with a kill, followed by three straight kills, an ace, and two more kills from Celus to give Monmouth a 20-16 lead. Despite the surge, Lake Forest rallied late to take the first set.
Celus opened the second set with a kill and added two more before senior Brynn Hogan delivered two aces to help the Scots build a 12-4 lead. Monmouth controlled the rest of the set, winning 25-17.
Senior Leah Allan opened the third set on serve, and Celus again delivered the first point. Hogan and senior Bailey Hill helped extend the lead before Lake Forest tied it at 8-8. The Scots pulled ahead with late kills by Hogan and sophomore Chloe Strachan, taking the set 25-19.
Hogan opened the fourth set with two aces, helping Monmouth jump to a 10-1 lead. The Scots dominated the rest of the way, closing out the match with a 25-11 win.
“Even after dropping the first set, we just stay confident in each other and support each other,” Strachan said.
“I feel like I’ve been anticipating this game for a month,” Scott said. “The supporters were great, and my teammates told me they were here to support me. That’s what really fueled me.”
